How to Improve Your Content Ranking?

First, we’ll talk about increasing your ranking by increasing relevance using SimilarContent. Ultimately, this is how Google works. It wants to show the pages that are the most relevant to the user’s query. So, it ranks all the pages of the internet in terms of the relevance of keywords.

But, How Does Google Determines Relevance?

  • It’s determined by looking at the content and images on the page. It makes sense, if someone is looking for “cats”, then Google will show the most relevant pages talking about cats.
  • It learns what relevance is by looking at what people are consuming on the internet so that you can start optimizing every piece of your content. So, whenever, there’s a new keyword that comes out that Google doesn’t know, it has to learn them. The higher the relevance score, the better you’re going to rank.

But, How Does Google Determines Word Relationship?

  1. If a brand new page on a brand new topic is written, Google will rank it based on the exact keyword. However, it will pay attention to all the previously known words too, at the same time.

For instance; if it has never seen your keyword, it doesn’t have anything to go on about, so it will just use that exact keyword to rank you for.

Also, Google will take into consideration words that are known and that you’re using on the website.

  1. The next time Google sees a new page on the same exact keyword, it will notice which words are repeated (excluding the keyword itself).

This means that two different websites used the same related terms when covering the same topic. Google associates these related terms to the exact keyword.

Let’s see an example…

  • If you’re the first person online to write about the “PG258Q” …

Google knows what I’m talking about! So, it will easily rank me for this keyword as long as I feature the word prominently throughout my page.

  • It will look at my page and notice that I’m using words like “Asus”, “Monitor”, “Gaming”, “240hz” frequently and store this information for later.
  • When someone ELSE publishes an article about the PG258Q, it will notice that they’re ALSO using the words Asus, Monitor, Gaming, 240hz, and Google will ‘learn’ that these words are related.
  • Then, Google will look at the search queries; so if people are typing …
    • PG258q
    • Asus PG258q
    • PG258q Asus
    • PG258q 240hz

This will help it understand the related searches and words.

  • Finally, if someone creates a third page and doesn’t include the related terms, Google will see them as less relevant because they’re missing these words.

So, the original pages will rank, while the third page will rank below them.

19 Amazing Search Tips to Find Endless Relevant Content Ideas:

A lot of people struggle with finding content ideas for their blog when it’s actually very simple and easy. From now on, you’ll never run out of content ideas and will always keep the website updated with fresh and relevant content …

How?!

1. Look at “Autocomplete”

Google’s Autocomplete gives predictions on what people usually look for when searching on a particular topic in question.

It just arranges the suggestions based on the most popular search terms and it’s always fresh and updated.

As you change the letter at the end of the search query, you get many ideas within the autocomplete features.

When you type “dog”, you get ideas like “dog breeds” and “dog names”. Now, suppose you wish to follow “dog names”. Autocomplete will help you here too. “Dog names male”, “Dog names female”, “Dog name list”, “Dog name tags”, and so on. Once you’re done with these, do the same with “Dog breeds” and see what you find!

2. Click on Search Bar Again

Apparently, you can get more content ideas by searching for the same phrase twice. How?

  1. Type what you are looking for in the search bar.
  2. Look at the autocomplete available.
  3. Click on one of the autocomplete results or enter to get the results.
  4. Then, click on the search bar with the mouse again.

Advanced on Page SEO -3

  1. You will discover that the autocomplete is showing different suggestions than the first time around.

Advanced on Page SEO -4

3. Look At Related Searches at the Bottom

After searching for a topic, scroll down to Google’s search page at the bottom, there you’ll see some content suggestions that you can write about.

Of course, you can use the LSI Graph to quickly find the related searches. But, SimilarContent made it easier to find related ideas on the topic.

Advanced on Page SEO -5

4. Use Asterisks (*) in Google’s Search Bar

This is a tip A LOT of content marketers don’t know about! As you put an * in the search query, Google replaces it with word suggestions.

For example, I typed “How to * Content Marketing”. Now, it’s showing words that I can put instead of the * like; “how to do content marketing”, “how to write content marketing”, etc.

Advanced on Page SEO -6

Literally, this opens up endless suggestions and ideas that you probably never thought about. It also keeps things very relevant to the core topic.

You can try using asterisks (*) across different places within the search bar and have fun with it.

5. Use ‘vs’ to Compare or Find Alternatives

Usually, people search for alternative solutions and like to compare things to one another.

Advanced on Page SEO -7

Definitely, if you use ‘vs’ beside your keywords, it will open a whole new gate to ideas for relative content for your site.

6. Try ‘site:search’

Digital marketers are missing on a lot of content ideas, especially for SEO. All you have to do is type ‘site:search’ in Google’s search bar, replace “search” for a website’s domain in your niche (it could be your best competitor).

Advanced on Page SEO -8

By doing this you’ll see all the pages published by that domain. In other words, you’re limiting the power of the Google search by searching one domain only.

If you’re wondering what the competitor is publishing, you can use this search technique. You can check if the pages are indexed by Google or not by putting the domain’s URL.

7. Search for Specific Content Published on Specific Websites

What if you want to discover what the competitors published on a certain topic? Then, you’ll combine “site:search” with a topic or search query.

Advanced on Page SEO -9

For example “site:competitor.com wedding”

If you’re looking for image-based content ideas, use Google images to get the best recent ideas.

These are really good practices to have a free and directly transactional nature of communication with your audience. It saves a lot of time too as you don’t fill your website with keywords that don’t work.

Advanced on Page SEO -10

8. “Search for Specific Phrases”

You can always find specific phrases you have on mind. To do that, use double quotation marks “like this” when you search.

Advanced on Page SEO -11

You’ll notice how the search results are different with and without the quotation marks.

9. Find Questions On Your Topic:

If you really want to increase the chances for an article to rank, then it’s always best to include questions.

But, how to know what people are asking about a topic you wrote on?

  1. Find popular websites where people often ask questions (Quora, Reddit, Stack Exchange network, for example).
  2. Combine keywords with a website of your choice, and you’ll see the questions people are asking around that topic.

Advanced on Page SEO -12

Advanced on Page SEO -13

10. Search for Specific Title:

If you have a certain keyword in mind and you want to look for ideas on how to use it in titles, then use ‘intitle:search’. It is perfect for this job.

Advanced on Page SEO -14

You may notice that the results will be different with and without the ‘intitle’ parameter.

Advanced on Page SEO -15

11. Search for Blogs and Forums

If you want to concentrate on blogs or forums, then use the ‘inurl:search’ feature.

Advanced on Page SEO -16

Pro search tip: Also, you can have more fun finding particular queries the audience may have. Search within Google or go into the forum and use the following phrases:

  • “Advice About”
  • “Need Help”
  • “I Hate”
  • “Does Anyone”
  • “Desperate For”
  • “Looking For”
  • “Can’t Find”
  • “Question About”
  • “Newbie”

Get creative and experiment with different phrases. Don’t forget to use quotation marks to search for that precise phrase if you are using the Google search bar.

12. Use ‘OR’ to Expand The Search

The ‘OR’ function is a very simple feature. If you can’t remember a specific topic you can use this feature, i.e. when and where it happened.

Advanced on Page SEO -17

13. Use ‘AND’ to find Two Topics:

Advanced on Page SEO -18

It’s similar to the “OR” search function, but it is still useful nonetheless if you are looking to combine two topics.

14. Search for particular URL using ‘inurl:search’

Most websites have blogs or forums and sometimes they have both. You can search specifically for these types of websites using ‘inurl:search’. Then, you can answer the questions that people may have in the form of rich, explanatory content.

Advanced on Page SEO -19

You can use this feature to find:

  • Blogs
  • Forums
  • Reviews, etc

15. Use Minus (‘-‘) to Exclude Searches

If you’re looking for very specific search results and want to get rid of any unwanted keywords, topics or domains, the minus “-” is the feature you must use.

For example, you want to write an article about “WordPress vs. Squarespace”, but you want to exclude results showing the official “wordpress.com” and “squarespace.com” sites.

Advanced on Page SEO -20

Or maybe you want to get rid of particular categories or directories like /tag/ within the search results and focus on actual pages.

Advanced on Page SEO -21

Or maybe you have a particular keyword that is also a common brand, but you want to exclude the brand from the results.

Well, if you’re searching for “Matrix” but you want to exclude the movie, then you’ll type “matrix -movie” in the search bar.

Advanced on Page SEO -22

16. Search for Content from Particular TLDs

TLD stands for Top Level Domain (.com, .net, etc.). In most cases, TLDs will appear if you search in the language you are looking for.

But if, for some reason, you’re looking for content in a specific domain extension, use “site.extension”.

Advanced on Page SEO -23

Don’t forget, searching for common TLDs such as .com, .net or .io might give the normal search results.

But, when you’re searching for specific industries such as .gov for official government sites, .ac.uk for universities, and in some cases .org for charities, this parameter will show more relevant results.

For example, if you want only British pages for something that’s more popular in the US, you search for the .uk domain name specifically.

17. Find Out More information on a Domain

Using ‘info:domain’ will help you discover more information about that particular competitor’s domain.

Advanced on Page SEO -24

This search feature will give links to the following about the domain in question:

  • Google’s cached pages
  • similar sites
  • list of all the pages indexed on Google
  • web pages that link to that domain
  • find pages which contain the term “bbc.co.uk”

18. Find Whitepapers or Ebooks about a Topic

Use ‘filetype:search’ function (for example, try “filetype:pdf”) to find ebooks, whitepapers or other kinds of PDF documents on a topic you’re writing about. This can be extremely helpful for something that is more academic or literary in nature and isn’t covered a lot by common websites.

Advanced on Page SEO -26

And in most cases, interesting whitepapers and ebooks are written in PDF format.

19. Find Powerpoint Slides and Presentations

Finally, you can find amazing slideshows and presentations by using ‘filetype:pptx’.

Advanced on Page SEO -27

And if you’re lucky, you will find presentations from high caliber individuals that aren’t always easy to find, i.e. university lecturers and scholars.

The above should give good ideas on where to start.

Bottom Line to Increase Rankings:

The more effective and related your keywords are in matching Google’s relevance database, the higher your content’s ranking will be.

This also creates a loophole that some like to exploit. Even if some words aren’t really related and Google is mistakenly thinking they’re associated, your content will still rank, and probably higher than others because no one else will be making those unrelated combinations of keywords.

For instance;

If the “PG258q” was released on Black Friday incidentally then the first set of pages that Google discovers about this all contain “Black Friday”, Google might think “Black Friday” is related to “PG258q”. Let’s say because of a coincidence thanks to e-commerce website sales or social media shopping sprees, these two become connected.

Now, you know how to increase the rankings by increasing relevance! But, are there tools that can help increase relevance? That’s what we’re going to discuss in part two

WRAPPING UP

So, now you have a checklist of sorts ready for each step in your process to optimize your website content. Hopefully, now you’re equipped with a lot of techniques to handle individual factors that help you rank on SERPs.

There are many signals that will tell you whether your content ranking is working or not. If it’s not, then perhaps it’s time to take another step and do a comprehensive makeover of your campaign.

Or perhaps, small changes in various elements of your website, including the code, your meta tags, or the services you offer, might be all you need to rank higher.

Sure, learning all aspects of on page SEO takes time. There is no perfectly correct way of doing on page SEO.

A complete analysis of your website will provide you with the right brand of actionable tasks like landing page changes, HTML fixes, expert content creating hacks, and so on — everything that involves user-friendly changes.

Urging people to read is not easy as opposed to helping them “scan” your page. Your on page SEO techniques should also focus on the same if you want your website to thrive in the SEO environment today. On page SEO is not exactly helpful to work towards getting more clients and bring them to purchase something — it mostly depends on the quality of your offering, but it helps more than anything else in doing so.
