When you type “dog”, you get ideas like “dog breeds” and “dog names”. Now, suppose you wish to follow “dog names”. Autocomplete will help you here too. “Dog names male”, “Dog names female”, “Dog name list”, “Dog name tags”, and so on. Once you’re done with these, do the same with “Dog breeds” and see what you find!
2. Click on Search Bar Again
Apparently, you can get more content ideas by searching for the same phrase twice. How?

If you’re wondering what the competitor is publishing, you can use this search technique. You can check if the pages are indexed by Google or not by putting the domain’s URL.
7. Search for Specific Content Published on Specific Websites
What if you want to discover what the competitors published on a certain topic? Then, you’ll combine “site:search” with a topic or search query.
For example “site:competitor.com wedding”
If you’re looking for image-based content ideas, use Google images to get the best recent ideas.
These are really good practices to have a free and directly transactional nature of communication with your audience. It saves a lot of time too as you don’t fill your website with keywords that don’t work.
8. “Search for Specific Phrases”
You can always find specific phrases you have on mind. To do that, use double quotation marks “like this” when you search.
You’ll notice how the search results are different with and without the quotation marks.
9. Find Questions On Your Topic:
If you really want to increase the chances for an article to rank, then it’s always best to include questions.
But, how to know what people are asking about a topic you wrote on?
- Find popular websites where people often ask questions (Quora, Reddit, Stack Exchange network, for example).
- Combine keywords with a website of your choice, and you’ll see the questions people are asking around that topic.
10. Search for Specific Title:
If you have a certain keyword in mind and you want to look for ideas on how to use it in titles, then use ‘intitle:search’. It is perfect for this job.

Or maybe you want to get rid of particular categories or directories like /tag/ within the search results and focus on actual pages.

Well, if you’re searching for “Matrix” but you want to exclude the movie, then you’ll type “matrix -movie” in the search bar.

TLD stands for Top Level Domain (.com, .net, etc.). In most cases, TLDs will appear if you search in the language you are looking for.
But if, for some reason, you’re looking for content in a specific domain extension, use “site.extension”.
Don’t forget, searching for common TLDs such as .com, .net or .io might give the normal search results.
But, when you’re searching for specific industries such as .gov for official government sites, .ac.uk for universities, and in some cases .org for charities, this parameter will show more relevant results.
For example, if you want only British pages for something that’s more popular in the US, you search for the .uk domain name specifically.
17. Find Out More information on a Domain
Using ‘info:domain’ will help you discover more information about that particular competitor’s domain.
This search feature will give links to the following about the domain in question:
- Google’s cached pages
- similar sites
- list of all the pages indexed on Google
- web pages that link to that domain
- find pages which contain the term “bbc.co.uk”
18. Find Whitepapers or Ebooks about a Topic
Use ‘filetype:search’ function (for example, try “filetype:pdf”) to find ebooks, whitepapers or other kinds of PDF documents on a topic you’re writing about. This can be extremely helpful for something that is more academic or literary in nature and isn’t covered a lot by common websites.
And in most cases, interesting whitepapers and ebooks are written in PDF format.
